Territorial Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are very territorial and I witnessed that firsthand this morning.
The male hummingbird would sit it the nearby tree watching carefully over his nectar source.
The female would come in to get a drink ....
and the male would chase her off. This scene was repeated several times this morning. I could hear them coming before I could see them. They are amazingly fast.

  1. Photos like these are the only reason I'm not smug about not having to clean out feeders. Of course, I'd need a faster camera with a better zoom to get photos like these, too, alas. Great shots!

  2. I still cannot believe that you are able to get pictures of these little things! They are amazingly quick.

I experienced the territorialism firsthand when I tried to stake up the bee balm one had knocked over. It buzzed my head a few times before I even realized what was happening, and I spun around to see it at head level chirping (swearing I'm sure) angrily at me!
