I have a visitor this week from Alabama. His name is Stanley, Flat Stanley. My nieces third grade Social Studies class is doing a project. Students are sending Stanley all over the U.S. and I'm one of the lucky recipients ;)
Here are the rules for for the project:
*Take care of Stanley.
*Take Stanley out with you and show him the sights in your city (state if possible).
*Take pictures of him at the different places you visit with him.
*Write about his adventures while he is visiting with you.
*After a week, please mail Stanley and his journal back to C. Elementary to the student who sent him to you. We would also be interested in receiving a postcard/brochure about your area. We are going to locate your city on our map and read about your community and state.
So, what in the world are we going to do to entertain Stanley? My s-i-l said I could take him to the grocery store and church with me. For some reason, my children are horrified to be seen with Stanley. I've thought of a few places we could all go together, but so far there have been no takers. I've even asked a friend if she would mind taking Stanley with her family tomorrow to Conner Prairie, the living history museum, and I could tell she wasn't too thrilled with suggestion, and thought her children would be embarrassed too. I guess Stanley and I will be on our own.
Awww... I think that Flat Stanley is fun! If we lived closer, I would take him to a few places here for you. (Although I bet Flat Stanley has been to the R&R Hall of Fame more than once already!)
ReplyDeleteFlat Stanley has come to see us a few times too, Robin - he went to museums, a Farmers Market and sat on the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue downtown. He even sat in a camellia bush. No children were around to be embarassed, so Philo & I could act as goofy as we wanted.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with him!

You should take Flat Stanley to see the White River, then maybe take him downtown to see the RCA Dome, Conseco Fieldhouse and Monument Circle. He would have a great time!

Flat Stanley sounds like a lot of fun. Go sightseeing with him and don't forget to bring your camera.:-)
ReplyDeleteI've done this sort of thing too with a doll that was send all over the world (for charity). It was great fun! Hope you have lots of fun too Robin!
I did a Google on Flat Stanley to get some ideas and didn't realize just how famous he was. He has even been to the White House, the Academy Awards with Clint Eastwood, and on Jay Leno with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Have you ever tried to type with a kitty in your lap licking your fingers, not easy let me tell you.)
ReplyDeleteBlackswamp_girl, I think it's fun too. I want my nieces Stanley to have a good time so he'll have lots to share with her class.
Annie, thanks for letting me know what you did with Stanley. I'm really getting excited about the project.
Carol, I definitely will take him to the White River, since Potters Bridge is so close. Downtown would be fun too. I'm going to send him home in a Colts jersey for sure. Thanks for the ideas.
Yolanda elizabet, I think it's a cute project. We've already gone to the library together and I took pictures of him at the aquarium and at the pirates island in the children's section. We got a few books on Indiana for me to "read" to him.
My son did Flat Stanley last year, & my daughter will do it this year. It's such a fun way to learn some geography. I'm glad you're into the spirit of it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun way for the kids to learn their geography! I doubt, however, that my kids would have taken him around.
ReplyDeleteI think Flat Stanley is a great school project. Sounds like he is enjoying his stay. I always felt it was my job as a mother to embarrass my children :-) Twenty years from now they'll laugh and say, "remember the time Mom made us pose with Flat Stanley?"
ReplyDeleteI was at a wedding and Flat Stanley was there with his lady friends. He was even going to the reception. He might enjoy the Children's Museum! :)
