Window Shots With a New Toy

I have a Sony Alpha-100 DSLR camera that I've hardly used because I only had the accessories that came with the camera, which consisted of one 18-70mm lens. Yesterday I stopped at an electronics store and they had the Sony 75-300mm lens on sale, plus I had a 12% off coupon and a $100 gift card from my husband's business credit card rewards program. So I only had to spend about $100 for this lens . This same range Canon and Nikon lens sales for $699.00. WOW! I was very pleased with my new purchase. These are a few of the first pictures I took this morning with my new lens.

I love to sit in front of the open window and watch the birds, butterflies and whatever other creatures I might happen to see. Now it will be a little easier to photograph things that are farther away.

  1. That's it. I had been contemplating a set of classes this winter, but now it's fixed. I bought a cool new Canon SLR digital a couple of months ago, but I'm pretty sure I'm not getting all I can out of it.

    The photos are awesome.

  6. Hi again, Robin

Congratulations on your new purchase! I have absolutely no doubt you will have great fun using your new toy. I too look forward to seeing your close-ups. It’s the clarity of detail in the distance that you will be really rewarded with using your new lens. I have a Canon 400D and mostly use a Tamron 55-200mm lens – I would love to get even closer though :-) Like, Bumblebee, I have been considering going to classes to get more out of my camera too.

Like you I am always looking for new, and old, visitors in my garden to photograph. I enjoy standing in my garden behind my camera on the tripod, with coffee in hand, waiting for garden birds to come to the trees or feeders. Last night I stood with my back door open waiting for our hedgehog to visit - camera on tripod as it was dark. I was thrilled to get my first photos! I have more video clips too – I’ve labelled them hedgehog if you would like to see them.

BTW your new pics look great – I particularly like to see your insects and butterflies but I will always enjoy seeing your birds :-)

  9. Very nice photos, sounds like you got a great buy! Isn't it fun to get new toys? The little hummer is a really a good shot, they don't sit still for long.

  10. Robin, I'm a novice with the SLR, there's so much to learn. I did take a camera class on the Alpha-100, but most of it went right over my head, I'd love to take it again along with the Photoshop Elements class that they have.

Thanks, Carol, I hope you've enjoyed your holiday.

    Connie, thank you.

Katie, compared to the cost of the lenses of other brands, I'm really glad now that I bought the Alpha. The prices are coming down on the lens so hopefully you can get yours soon.

    Thanks, Kylee.

Shirl, I'll be by to visit tonight sometime to see your hedgehog.

Yolanda E: Glad your back from your holiday. Thanks for the well wishes.

Pam: Thank you. You are my gardening photography inspiration!

Iowa gardening woman, thank you. I love a good bargain! Hopefully now I'll have an easier time catching them from a distance.

  11. Great pictures! I am really jealous. I never mastered the art of photography, I guess it is because it takes time and the right equipment to get great pictures. I haven't had the time to learn. Maybe when I retire?

  13. Wow, those are amazing shots, but I'm especially attracted to the Painted Lady. I love looking at all those circles and swirls on the underside of the wings.

  14. You got a fabulous deal on that lens! My hubby just surprised me with a Canon EF 100-300mm lens. I can't wait to experiment more with it!!
Your photos are really wonderful. I especially love your hummingbird pics, and am impressed that you've managed to get shots of them in the garden as well as at the feeder. I can see you're making good use of the new lens :)
    Thanks for visiting!
