I woke up yesterday morning to a heavy frost on the ground. As much as I dreaded seeing it, it was actually quite beautiful. While still in my fleece pajamas and before coffee, I put on my coat and grabbed my camera and headed out to take a few pictures and enjoy the beauty of the delicate frost on my garden.
There is a late blooming sunflower that has just opened up and a few small roses on the Knock Out rose bushes. This frost pretty much finished up what was left of the cosmos.
I know a lot of people don't like the 'Purple Wave' petunias, but I love them and have them every year. They are so easy to grow from seed in my indoor growing system, I usually have a 100% success rate. There aren't too many flowers that I can say that about! When they start looking tacky in late summer, I cut them way back and they come to life again rewarding me with beautiful blooms well into autumn. They can withstand a significant frost and still look pretty. They can also withstand the heat and don't have to be pampered. Definitely a must have for me!

ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when said you grabbed your camera to run get a picture. I've been outside more than once in my jammies because I saw something out the window that was calling my name! Beautiful colors in your mosaic, seems like a little frost will bring out those vibrant colors!

Hard frosts are hard to take because they mean the end of the gardening season but they are a work of beauty. I too run out with the camera after the first hard frost to captured the frosted leaves. Your mosaic of frost is beautiful - I especially like the outline on the roses!

We had the same frost on Sunday morning, and like you, Robin, I had to get out the camera. You have captured the beauty of the morning so well in these photos! I like the Supertunias, which must be a variation on the Waves. I agree, though, that they're a must-have in my garden in the summer. I still have a few blooms hanging on.

ReplyDeleteYou're a true gardener when you choose photos/flowers over coffee;-) I love the sugar-coated appearance of the flowers. I'm one of those people whose favorite type of petunia IS the purple wave. In fact, that's the only color and type that I get!

ReplyDeleteHi Robin, We haven't had any frost yet --so all of our roses and other flowers are still blooming.. There has been frost all around us-but none here yet. I'm sure it's coming though!!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with your photography before coffee too Robin! The photos turned out beautifully. I love to look at frosted flower photos but I haven't ever tried to take any myself. I'm not a fan of cold (even in the mildest sense) so I don't usually venture out. I'm glad I can look at them on other blogs.
ReplyDeleteps we had a cold, wet summer too which makes it hard to believe we're moving up a gardening zone. I guess it's based on overall temps??
