Thanks for the Backup Suggestions
Thanks everyone for the comments regarding my post on backing up my picture files.
It seems that multiple locations is the way to go to safely store those images! I'm purging files by necessity. I think maybe I'm overwhelming my system by trying to copy too much at one time. None of the DVD programs that I've tried can handle my file load. I even purchased Simple Save by Memorex and it can only handle a 10 DVD maximum. At least its winter and there is nothing to do outside and it gives me a chance to look at all of the pictures that warm my heart and make me happy.
I did get over 9000 images safely transferred to the laptop from the external drive. Hopefully the rest of the images are stored safely in the drive.
As Sylvia reminded us, sometimes things can happen that can destroy even our external drives and DVDs. My friend just recently lost her family home to a fire, during the recent ice storm in Kentucky. Her family lost everything. So, this has already been on my mind. Once I get the computer issues taken care of, I'll be checking into the other online sources for additional backup.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

This back-up stuff is somewhat overwhelming for me.How many places to use, what is bestwho knows?Currently I am burning DVD's in hopes that this will be good enough.Have fun gooing through all the old pictures.Enjoy the memories.
Blessings,Ruth
You've hit upon something that reminds me of laundry and closet cleaning...things I dislike doing! Both of which must be done, but sometimes things just get thrown in and not folded, or in a ball in a corner, etc. Also reminds me of my junk drawers that need cleaning out. There's always something to take up our time, isn't there?!
I've lost all my pictures a couple of times. It breaks your heart. Your kiddos above are precious blowing those bubbles and the hummer is the sweetest little guy. Love ya Robin--have an awesome weekend.
I'm glad to hear you're making a little progress, Robin. I use Roxio to make DVDs. It came with Windows and works great. Perhaps you can download it for free if you don't already have it.
Those little faces are oh, so precious. What a wonderful photo.
That glorious rose and the hummingbird are equally as beautiful. You do such a wonderful job with your camera.
I hope you have a great weekend too :)
Kudos to you for making the effort to back up your photos Robin.
I need to do the same!
Thanks for the guilt trip, uh..reminder. :-) I need to do this, too! Especially with all the photos of my sweet granddaughter.
For an online backup service, check out mozy.com. It's free up to 2GB of storage. Keeping a copy of your data offsite is always a good idea in case of fire/flood/etc.
And no, I don't work there :)
I hope all of your photos are fine.
I use TimeMachine on the Mac to backup to an external drive. I also upload my vacation/family photos to Picasa so that there are duplicates offsite. In IT, we had to create disaster recovery plans for data, so I like having the irreplaceable photos duplicated.

It is a good way to make sure you don't lose photos. I have an external harddrive that I back my photos up to monthly, but I should do it more often.
Robin, so glad you got all your marvelous pics backed up! I love the new ranuculus pic-it is gorgeous!!
So glad you got your backups figured out! Currently I am using my external harddrive for my backups!
Ooops! Don't know how to back up anything here.........Lovely photos, that first one is so precious.
I gosh, Robin. I have not backed up anything; however, my best photos are on Flickr, at least. I really do need to work on a plan to save everything.
Thanks for the nudge.
Robin, having reminded you to be extra careful, today I want to say that it is only pictures and words! 20 years (or 10 for most of us) we didn't have this detailed record of our lives - film was expensive. So please don't get too stress about back-ups, your memories will live on and it isn't that important.
Sorry to be contradictory! Best wishes Sylvia (England)
Hi Robin, I've just finished walking through your site again and I'm very impressed with the number of pictures where you catch nature in action. That shot of the Leaf-cutter Bee is wonderful. It shows a lot of patience to get some of the scenes that you've come up with. You certainly do want to backup those pictures with a reliable system. On the Mac side of the fence Apple has made backing up an automatic function but it still means that one needs to consider what would happen if the house went up in smoke. I've thought about sending an archival set of photographs to my children but never seem to get around to it.
Robin,
Occasionally, our favorite little bubble blowing boy and I come to your site to look at the "pretty pictures." He loves the vivid photos of animals the best. Tonight...he thought the possum was a "seahorse" and he is VERY concerned that Lilly doesn't wear a coat when she plays outside in the snow, just so you know.
