Back in the Saddle

These aren't exactly beautiful pictures of butterflies but I wanted to show that you can attract a variety of butterflies by providing fruit for them.

Hackberry butterfly- (First time to see this one in the garden!)

Each time I cut a melon I place the rinds outside. The butterflies flock to it! The flies do too, but I try not to think about that.

I think this is a Viceroy

I found this blue plastic tray with a stand for $2.00 at a garage sale early this summer. I bought it with this specific thing in mind. It has worked just like I had hoped that it would!

Red Spotted Purple

Last year was cool and rainy, I think I may have seen five butterflies all summer long. This year has been hot and I have seen more species in my garden than ever before. I think the watermelon has helped attract them to the garden, especially the red spotted purple. They love it!

Question Mark

I apologize for my lengthy absence. I just needed some time to process all of the changes in my life. Losing my mother was such a shock. Sadly sometimes these things tend to bring about the worst in people, so there have been some challenges regarding extended family as well. I was not expecting to deal so soon with greed and malicious behavior. It is very sad and incredibly hurtful.

It is time to move on and try to enjoy my life and my own precious family again.

Monarch

I have also had frustrating computer issues. My desktop computer has been in the shop twice and it needs to go back again. Thankfully it is still under warranty. The laptop I use now is frustrating because it skips letters and without warning it erases large sections of script and pictures. I just have not felt like doing battle with it and Blogger to post. Hopefully, now that I am in a better frame of mind, I can get back in the saddle and post more regularly.

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and encouraging comments for me during this very difficult time in my life. I've missed you all!

Welcome back Robin. I can say that Weddings and Funerals bring out the best and the worst in people. I am sorry you had to deal with the worst in your time of great sorrow. I have missed you here in bloggy land. I was wondering if you had lots of butterflies as we do too this year. This incredible heat has been a boon to them. Your pictures are great. Can't wait to see more.

Welcome back Robin, we are happy to see you.

The butterflies are gorgeous, and lovely.

As for the nasty events happening right now for you, nfortunately this does bring out the worst in some people, lets hope that they come to their senses soon. We have been through this a couple of times already, it's not pleasant, my heart goes out to you.

It is amazing the family fights that ensue after a loved one dies--possession, memory, pain, chaos. Thoughts are with you.

I'm sorry you've been going through such a rough time Robin. You have been in my thoughts and prayers. Your butterfly photos are stunning. I've never put out melon rinds for the butterflies, but I can see I'm going to have to give it a try!

Such a treat to see your beautiful photos again, Robin! This has been a great year for butterflies, hasn't it? I found a dish on clearance one day that I set out as a butterfly feeder, and I've been adding fruit to it, too. I even put out an overripe banana one day, but it quickly disappeared--apparently Sophie (my Golden) likes bananas:)

I hope that time is helping you to heal from the loss of your mother, Robin, and that happy memories of her will sustain you. So sorry to hear about family issues; I can relate to this more than you know. My husband and sister-in-law still aren't speaking, over 10 years after the passing of their parents. So sad when family let greed get in the way of helping and comforting each other.

Robin, I'm so sorry to hear about all the tough issues you are dealing with, but I hope you have found your butterfly garden to be a kind of therapy. I put out some watermelon rinds once, but promptly forgot about them, and hubby sure scowled at that idea. I think I'll find myself a plastic tray like yours, that wouldn't be quite so messy!

Hi Robin, I'm so happy to see your butterfly photos! When I've put fruit out in the past, it's been to see if birds would go for it. No luck with that. But it did attract a possum to my deck! I might give this a try again though, since right now my yard is loaded with butterflies...both back and front gardens! I just love seeing them! It might be fun to see if they'd try the fruit in addition to the blossoms!
Again, I am sorry for your mom's passing. I read Rose's comment and although I don't usually express too many personal issues publicly, when my Dad died in 2005 we had similar issues. My brother & his wife have still not spoken to my mother, my sister or myself. It's very sad what happens when people die, sometimes.
Hang in there girlie;-)

Wonderful to have you back Robin - you sound like you are handling this very difficult period with infinite grace. As others have said - may each day be a little easier than the next. My best wishes.

I'm glad to see that you're back too. Crazy how the death of family members can affect relationships. My mother's brothers and sisters fought so much over the grandparents and their estate in their final years that they don't have anything to do with each other anymore. I'm glad that you are doing better than that. :)

Robin,
Sorry to hear about losing your mother! I hope things are getting back to normal and the healing is swift.

I once brought home a papaya and set out one half of it for the butterflies. I counted 22 Red-spotted Purples on it at one time.

Glad you're back, Robin. You needed that time away.

I've had issues with my laptop deleting things, too, but found a way to recover it most of the time. When the text disappears, just go to your task bar at the top and click on Edit, then Undo. Many times it will come back. It's saved me many times! It's worth a try!
