They Finally Found Us
After living in our home for over eight years, I finally saw my first squirrel today! Our home was built on farm land and there were no mature trees around. We planted several large maple trees on our lot along with other trees and shrubs. With all of the rain we've had they are all growing so fast right now.
Whenever I pass by a window I always glance out toward the bird feeder to see what's there. Today I saw something that I didn't recognize and went to get a closer look. I was so surprised to see a little squirrel! I figured one day they would discover the bird feeders. I was excited to see it, but had dread at the same time. Hopefully he'll keep it a secret and not share the news with his family.

Robin, they are so cute, but do make a nuisance at the bird feeders and in the bulb garden. I love the female cardinal. Looks like she has had a bad day in the nest and is daring anyone to come eat while she is there.
Uh Oh! That looks like trouble in the making to me!!
It took about 10 years for squirrels to arrive in our subdivision. And yeah, it's a bit scary but we've accepted them and even put up a squirrel feeder. Might as well try and make friends, we figure.
Hi Robin! I live in a newer subdivision added onto an older subdivision. I didn't see squirrels either when I first moved in (eight years ago) but after feeding the birds for a few years, word got around and they started showing up. I figured they just migrated over from the older part of the neighborhood? I don't have too many (last winter I saw three at once, which was a first) so I still think they're more cute than a nuisance. One did chew holes thru my thistle sock the other day tho which I wasn't happy about (but like someone told me, it's cheap to replace). Do you keep your feeders out all year? I end up pulling most of mine in the summer because of the starlings & grackles. If you do, he will likely hang around. Even if he doesn't, now that he knows about your garden, I'm sure he'll come back!
Good luck with the squirrels.I like the purple spiky flowers.Sorry I don't have a name for them.
Blessings,Ruth
Sorry to tell you, but squirrels cannot keep a secret. They will tell all the others about your feeder. If you put up baffles, one of them will eventually find a workaround and blab it to all the others.
Hi...I found you on Ruth's photo blog. You have a wonderful place here. I am a southern girl living and gardening in Michigan. Looks like IN is very similar. However, I would LOVE to bring you some of my many squirrels. I have the little red one that's on your feeder...he WILL return with all his kin folk! We have 4 kinds of squirrels that visit my yard daily...that little red one can climb on my window screens to get to one of my feeders!
My last post has some pictures from my gardens.
Squirrels are so much fun to watch and they don't keep secrets. Time to set up a squirrel feeder. They are good little friends despite what everybody says.
I've been in my house for 14 years and so far have not seen any squirrels.
Rabbits, however.....
That is the cutest little tree rat! He looks so fuzzy.
They lull us into thinking they are cute! Before long news will spread that Robin is a good provider! Then you will have wonderful photos of them doing daring acrobatics and hanging by one toe nail
to reach a seed. You are in store for endless hours of entertainment. I say get them a feeder and keep it stocked so they might leave the bird's food alone. Gail
Hello I just started to follow this great blog. Wow 8 years with no squirrel's. I personally don't mind any of the squirrels in my yard, and have set up feeders just for them. Others tend to hate them. I know mine have torn up a few flimsy bird feeders here and there, but I don't mind too much.
Dear Robin, please let me know if you need more squirrels. I'll send you several bushy tails that dig out my seeds! .... Or maybe not. They are cute and I have a love/hate relationship with them.
Love hate relationship is very fitting. We don't see squirrels too much but more chipmunks. Lately some squirrels have been hanging out though. Getting the cute pictures is worth the little they may tear up - although someone did tear every bit of the brand new insulation Bob had put in the pumphouse years ago - that one wasn't very nice!
And I finally "found" you again too, Robin. I checked my feeds just now, and your blog is back! Yea!! Did you do something to fix it, or is it just one of those strange things?
