Joy, My Wish for You, (and Spam)

I made these ornaments as a young, new bride in 1982. I had just learned to cross-stitch and was looking for inexpensive ornaments for our first tree. We still use them, along with many of the hand crafted ornaments from that first year. Ours is a sentimental tree, not much in the way of glitz and glamor, but very meaningful to us.

Hard to believe I've been using these since 1982!

Is anyone else seeing an increase in spam over the last few weeks? I've never been bothered by it too much since I began my blog, but that has definitely changed. Thankfully it is all on older posts and I have the comment moderation on posts over ten days old. This way I catch the spam but you don't have to be bothered with the nuisance of word verification.

I am also receiving quite a few requests to plug businesses or other business blogs. I consider that a nuisance too. Are any of you getting more of that, and if so how do you respond? It definitely adds to the stress of blogging, not knowing what is legitimate or not. I have been just ignoring those because I don't want to use my blog for advertising. Any comments or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robin, I have had some spammer type comments...mostly about viagra type products. I put wrod verification on, though I don't like using it. I don't know about the ones you have been getting, but you could just say you are not endorsing any advertising and those will be deleted (if they make it past wv, if you want to turn it on)

I made the same cross stitch ornaments when I was first married, too. I was so pleased that I could make something!

Occasionally I will get a spam comment, but I erase them.

Thank you so much for the comments!

I hope it stays that way for you too, Ruth! I'm not sure why I've had the increase recently.

Janet, those are the ones I'm getting too. Also several in foreign languages that seem to be along those same lines. I think I will put someting on the sidebar stating that I'm not endorsing products or businesses on my blog. Thanks for the suggestion!

Gail, I don't know of too many people who cross-stitch anymore. I don't do it either, but for a long time it was my favorite hobby.

So, Mrs. Bama girl, did you watch the Bama game? So glad they did such an awesome job in the game and this season.... Roll Tide! Thanks for stopping by my blog. The snow didn't last long, but such a treat to get.

Southerner, my family watched the game and I was in the kitchen cooking. I did hear most of it though. The Tide has indeed had a great season!

I have noticed more than usual spam lately and people asking for endorsements. Weird. I just ignore the latter.

I love your ornaments. I also did some ornaments in the early 80's. Our tree has many hand mades. I think they are best.

I love handmade ornaments. I have so many from different family, friends and places.

Yes, a lot more spam and they are even leaving "nice" comments in order to try to keep their links in the comments. I'm doing moderation on comments that are 3 days old. I'm deleting anything with a link to anything, even legitimate businesses as I don't want the advertising. In fact, whenever the G ads on my blog eventually reach $100 (when they pay, but it's been over a year!), I am deleting those.

Heartfelt, homey ornaments are best, imho. They MEAN something and keep the holiday rooted in what's truly important. Bully for you, I say! And YES, I've been getting some spam comments that show up as complete gibberish. I would say it's oriental in origin, but the symbols spotted throughout suggest otherwise. Fortunately, I weed them out and don't publish them. Anyone else getting that?

First of all, I love your new header, Robin--very festive! I know many people put up several Christmas trees in their homes, but until a few years ago it was all I could do to have one. Now I have a second smaller tree that is my sentimental tree. I have ornaments that my kids made in elementary school--before you were married! Some of them are getting a bit tattered, but they make me smile every time I look at them.

As for the spam, yes, I've gotten some comments from strange places, and the e-mail address I use on my blog is constantly getting mail from advertisers. I just ignore it--I do hope the spammers aren't doing anything to my posts.

It started with spam on older posts that the 10 day rule took care of catching before other readers could see them.

All my spam was anonymous, in Japanese, which I took to a translation site and determined it was truly undesirable.

The spammer got more cunning. He put an anonymous line with a saying that could come from a fortune cookie, followed by a line of dots. Click on the dots, be transported to a porn site in Japanese.

I've resorted to word verification.

I don't get offers for promotions. I'm not that popular, or maybe my endorsement just wouldn't be that believable.

Joy to you this Christmas season, too.

I did some cross stitch ornaments like that... years ago, now. I still have some tucked away....so I can teach my granddaughter how to cross stitch when she is old enough. as they are great for beginners.
I have had a few spam comments, and lots of endorsement emails. I just ignore them, as I am not interested in turning my blog into an advertisement for anyone.

It is lovely to have Christmas ornaments with sentimental value.
I have word verification so I have not had spam a few emails for advertising though.
Thank you for visiting me and for your kind words.I see we have some common interests!

Hi,
I had a seed company contact me about advertising...I told them that my blog was not for advertising, but when they send out their catalogs, in the Spring, I might mention them in a post as I have other companies that I order from.. and am pleased with.

Just lovely, Robin. I love it.

As for the spam, we began getting daily comments on the old blogger posts, mostly viagra ads. We turned off the comments for those old posts, since they also are on wordpress. If I can ever get around to fixing all the links to the blogger posts so that there will be no broken links, I will be deleting the blogger Faire Garden. Wordpress has an excellent spam filter, they never appear on the blog unless I okay them, which is rare.

Balisha, I had that too.

Frances, thank you!!! I am having spam on the same blog post and I forgot that I could close comments on individual posts. I've already closed the comments on that one. Hopefully that will take care of the pesty foreign spam hitting my email every day.

I love your little cross stitched ornament. I did some cross stitching years ago too and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now that I'm older and my eyesight isn't as great as it used to be, I'm sure it would make me cross-eyed!

I have also had a huge increase in spam in the last month or two. Usually 1 or 2 a day. Really aggravating! I first tried word verification but decided to switch to moderation on older posts. I have also gotten a few solicitations for advertising but just ignored them because I blog for pleasure, not money.

I guess now is the best time to just stay in and start a cross-stitch. I wish I know how ...
Love yours.

Hi Robin, I've been getting more spam. I have comment moderation on for older posts and for new commenters. As for the business plugs, I sometimes respond and kindly tell them I don't do that. Other times, I just ignore them.~~Dee
