Cooper's Hawk

Cooper's Hawk

I glanced out the window this afternoon, while I was on the phone with my husband, and didn't see any birds at the feeders. I quickly scanned my yard and my neighbors yard and I spotted the Cooper's Hawk in the neighbor's tree. I asked my husband if I could call him right back because I wanted to try and get a picture of the hawk. Thankfully he is a good sport and understanding of my current blog/photography/birding obsession.
I took a few pictures from the landing window, which didn't turn out well. I was concerned that it would fly away when I opened the patio door but it didn't. I kept taking pictures as I stepped closer and closer to the back of my yard. I didn't get very far before the Cooper's hawk flew away but at least I got a better picture than the ones from inside the house.

I was freezing when I went back inside since there was no time to grab a coat. I made a cup of hot chocolate and promptly called my sweet hubby back.

What a handsome adult Cooper's Hawk. What a great photo Robin. We usually have juveniles in our garden. I never get such good photos either. Good job.

Wow! That is an incredible bird. And a wonderful photo! I think I'm getting a new camera with a zoom lens for Christmas. I can't wait! :-) We had some new, still unidentified birds, at our house today and I wish I could have gotten some good photos!

Robin, how I envy your beautiful bird photos!! They are good enough to be in any bird magazine, for sure. I had a hawk (looked young) on my feeder the other day and think it was a Cooper's but am not sure. Light was bad and it was snowing. In order to get outside to take photos (because of previous owner's remodeling) I have to run through my kitchen, out the garage and back porch, then around to the back. Of course, by that time whatever I wanted to photograph is long gone. Keep up the good work. I LOVE looking at your photos and birds.

Wow! Go birding obsession! Your photography technique is the same as mine: take one photo quickly in case it goes away, then keep taking them as you creep closer and closer until it flies away. Love it.

We see these hawks sitting on our playset or fence posts quite often.

Last year we had a hawk (not sure what kind) that killed a rather large rabbit (or hare) in our backyard... I let it be for a day or two, but then got rid of it, as I didn't want the kids to get into the bloody rabbit. The hawk came back for a couple of days wondering where it's kill was, but finally gave up. I posted it, last January, maybe. Yikes, gives me the heebiejeebies!

I love this photo. Great pictures always come when one goes after the shot...others miss them when they put on their coats.

Great picture! Great bird! They never seem to get close enough for me to photograph.
